America
This chart of the Americas shows 'those known parts in that unknowne worlde'
as it was imagined in 1626.
At the top of the map are eight illustrations of the important cities of the New World,
including Cartagena, Cusco, Havana and 'Rianeiro', presumably Rio de Janeiro.
To its sides are figures of the native peoples of America, including a Peruvian, a Virginian
and a 'Groenlandian' looking very cosy within his furs!
The inclusion of ships and strange creatures in the sea,
and an inset showing Greenland and the North Pole,
'seeing that it could not be contained which in the compasse of this Mape',
enhance the mystique of this map, a wonderful reminder of times past.
